Visual Arts Auditions
for Grades 7
NEXT GRADE 7-12 AUDITIONS:

Stivers' Visual Arts Magnet students become image makers based upon their mastery of visual literacy. Students study their rich cultural heritage and work to develop an understanding for artists and their tools. Our young artists will examine and use a rich variety of media and build the foundations of a diverse aesthetic vocabulary. Each student artist will be introduced to computer graphic technology and its application to image making.
Each student artist will be introduced to photography and the basic fundamentals of the darkroom environment. Emphasis is placed on the introduction to and the application of the elements of art, thus empowering our young artists with the knowledge and the skills to create. Homework is assigned on a regular basis because becoming a successful artist requires practice and a personal investment of time.
Step-By-Step Audition Process
Students auditioning in visual arts will be required to complete two consecutive 45 minute sessions.
The first session will consist of a still-life observational drawing exercise. Students will be evaluated on their knowledge and application of the following concepts:
- Use of space
- Surface texture
- Evidence of scale
- Essence of light
- Interaction of objects
- Attention to detail
- Establish color variety
- Ability to see what is before them
- Level of concentration
- Level of completion
The second session will consist of a three dimensional exercise. Students will be asked to create a three dimensional imaginary creature that demonstrates their ability to:
- Work with three dimensional materials
- Apply textural surfaces
- Create a free-standing form
- Attention to detail
All necessary materials will be provided at the time of audition.
All students will also be asked to write a short statement that describes their personal goals as a young artist and their reasons for wanting to attend Stivers School for the Arts to fulfill their goals.
Each area will be evaluated on a ten point scale with one point being the lowest score and 10 points being the highest. All points will be added to form one final score.
Student scores will be prioritized for acceptance into the program, waiting-list status or central office magnet placement.
