Theatre Auditions for Grades 9-12

The following guidelines will prepare you for the audition for the Theater Magnet.

The Stivers Theatre program will introduce the student to the basics of theatre history, technique, and stagecraft. Courses explore famous playwrights, play reading and writing, memorizing monologues and scripts, improvisations, character analysis, vocal interpretation, stage make-up, costuming, directing, and technical theatre.

Audition Requirements

Presentation of two contrasting memorized selections. The student should select two monologues from the preparation material below. The audition will be deemed unsuccessful if the monologue is not memorized.

  • Reading of a new selection that will be provided at the time of the audition.

  • Two short improvisations - short skits devised on the spot.

  • A headshot (or photograph) and resume highlighting candidate's theatrical experiences.

  • A short written questionnaire concerning the student's goals and interests.

  • A brief interview with the student concerning their theatrical experiences; what you enjoy about theatre and why you want to continue to study the theatrical arts.

Each of the above areas will be scored on a five point scale with five points being the highest and one point being the lowest.

The memorized selection, improvisations and the cold reading will be evaluated on the following skills:

  • Voice quality and projection

  • Movement and creativity

  • Interpretation

  • Stage presence and spontaneity

  • Ability to follow direction

  • Ability to memorize

After-school rehearsals are required. Contracts are issued for every performance that must be signed by the student and his/her parent. Performance is a very serious commitment where every performer depends upon every other performer to develop a quality theatrical work. Performances require after-school work on a regular basis.
