Stivers band students play a diverse range of music from traditional band music to jazz. Students have the opportunity to take one-on-one studio lessons with adjunct faculty. There are also masterclasses with professional musicians during the school year.
Students of the band magnet may participate in various regional and national competitions. Many students have gone to prestigious music camps, such as Interlochen Arts Camp, the Berklee College of Music summer program and the Summer Jazz Academy hosted by Jazz at Lincoln Center. Graduates have been accepted to prestigious colleges and universities such as the Berklee College of Music, Ohio State University, Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and Oberlin Conservatory among others.
The Concert Band is a foundational course in instrumental studies. This year-long course will focus on the foundations of playing a wind or percussion instrument. Special attention will be given to the building of instrumental techniques and basic ensemble playing skills. Students will focus on instrument care, proper posture, playing with a quality sound and instrumental technique. The concert band will also study the basics of the American art form that is jazz and improvisation through ear training exercises and guided listening.
The Symphonic Band is the intermediate performing wind band of Stivers School for the Arts. This year-long course will focus on the performance and study of various styles and time periods of wind literature. Special attention will be given to the building upon existing instrumental techniques and ensemble dynamic concepts required of advanced musicians as well as building the comprehensive, thoughtful and expressive musician
The Wind Ensemble is the premier performing wind band of Stivers School for the Arts. This year-long course will focus on the performance and study of various styles and time periods of wind literature. Special attention will be given to the masterworks of the wind band repertoire and building a comprehensive, thoughtful and expressive musician.
Jazz Orchestra is a year-long course of study that is open to any woodwind, brass, percussion, and piano students who are selected by the music faculty. Advanced jazz repertoire is chosen from the professional libraries of current and historical composers and arrangers. Performance opportunities and masterclasses are offered with guest artists several times during the year. The jazz orchestra opened the TEDxDayton event in 2014 and opened for Smokey Robinson in 2015. The Stivers Jazz band took first place at Boston's 2004 and 2008 Berklee Jazz Festivals among top high school jazz bands from across the nation. Every concert that the Jazz Orchestra performs is recorded. The group has five CD recordings to date.
