Gallery Shows:

Stivers School for the Arts, Fifth Street Gallery presents “Masks: The Hidden Message,” an extensive collection of Mexican and Guatemalan masks. The exhibit includes over thirty masks originating mainly from Mexico and Guatemala, where they were discovered and acquired by a local collector. Masks from this region were used primarily during various ceremonial dances and were often worn with intricately designed, full-body costumes. In Mexico, El Dia de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is the most popular mask-wearing celebration. The masks included in this exhibit are both fascinating and captivating; making one speculate about the carver who created them and the individual who wore them. These amazingly crafted artifacts range in subject; from terrifying devils to merry monkeys, and from the troubled and complexly bearded “water caller” to the mask with a humorous and smiling expression.

“Masks: The Hidden Message” will be on display at the Fifth Street Gallery located within Stivers School for the Arts, 1313 East Fifth Street, Dayton OH 45402. The exhibit runs from January 30th, 2012 to March 2nd, 2012, with a reception held on Friday, February 3rd from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event is free to attend. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please contact Gallery Director, Shannon Grecula, to schedule a guided tour of the exhibit. Stivers School for the Arts and the Fifth Street Gallery will be closed for Winter Break, February 17th - February 21st.
 

5th Street Gallery Gift Shop
The beginning of the school year marks the reopening of the Fifth Street Gallery – a gift shop located within the Stivers School and benefiting the students of Stivers.

The gift shop opened December 9, 2010 with an eclectic mix of donated, consigned and a few purchased items. The shop is open daily from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and other times by request in the Magnet office. The shop is also open during special events and performances.  To date we have experienced moderate success – many of you have visited us during last year’s performances and supported our efforts to support our students. We thank you!

We are currently seeking donations of interesting house wares, decorative pieces, old furniture, holiday décor, antiques, industrial and farm implements, tools and textiles. These are but a few of the items we could use in the Gallery.

As you’re cleaning out the garage, attic or your closets – please consider donating to the Fifth Street Gallery. Donations to the Gallery are tax deductible and used for a very good purpose – to support the students of Stivers!

VolunteersWanted – The Fifth Street Gallery
We’re looking for a few good Moms, Dads, Grandmas or Grandpas who can donate a couple of hours a week to the Fifth Street Gallery!

If you have some time to spare, we want you to help us man the Gift Shop. Current hours are 11 – 1 during school and we’re also open during special events. We would like to increase our hours of operation to encompass the school day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please phone 937-542-7448 or pick-up a volunteer application in the Magnet Office.
