Stivers student wins district-wide spelling bee

Congratulations to Alexis Diggs, winner of the 2012 District-wide Spelling Bee! Alexis bested 30 other competitors, which included DPS, private, parochial and charter schools, to win the 62nd annual competition. Her winning word, done at the end of the 12th round, was "omnivorous."

Despite a poised, assured performance, Alexis, a seventh grader at Stivers School for the Arts, admits to being really nervous during her time on stage. She vows to amp up her spelling lessons from now until Feb. 25, when she competes in the regional spelling bee, held at Sinclair College. (Check out a quick interview with Alexis here.)

Third place honors went to Gabby Rauch, a seventh-grade student at Horace Mann PreK-8 School.
